5 4 G e t R e a d y fo r y o u r fi rst jo b What Should Be on Your Resume? Education: List your high school and any relevant classes, skills, or interests. Experience: Include part-time jobs, volunteer work, clubs, sports, and internships. Even babysitting or tutoring counts— anything that shows you’re responsible. Achievements: Highlight any awards, interesting class projects, or community service you’ve done. This shows that you’re not only involved but also committed to doing your best. Are Resumes Just for Jobs? You’ll need one for more than just job applications. Resumes are useful when applying for scholarships, internships, and even college. It’s smart to have one ready now and keep it updated as you get more experience. Choosing the Right Resume Style There are a few ways to format your resume, and it’s up to you to decide which style best highlights your strengths. Chronological Resume: This one lists your experience from most recent to oldest. It’s great if you’ve had a few different jobs or activities. Getting your first job is a big deal! Whether you’re applying for a part-time job, an internship, or even a scholarship, being prepared can make all the difference. What are the two major steps to focus on? Crafting a solid resume and nailing the interview. Here are some things you can do to head into the job search with confidence. Building a Strong Resume Your resume is basically your personal highlight reel. It’s a one or two page snapshot that shows employers who you are, what you’ve done, and why you’d be great for the job. Since it’s the first thing they see, you want to make sure it leaves a strong impression.
7 6 Functional Resume: This format focuses more on your skills, such as leadership or communication, rather than specific jobs. Combination Resume: A mix of both. It highlights your skills and includes a short work history. Resume Tips • Keep it to one, or maybe two, pages. • Use a simple, readable font (size 10-12). • Proofread it for mistakes—ask a friend, family member, or teacher to help. Getting Ready for the Interview After submitting your resume, you might get called in for an interview. The interview is your chance to show your personality, skills, and why you’re a great fit for the position. Here’s how to prep: Before the Interview, research the company. Check out their website, social media, or any news about them. Knowing their mission or goals will help you explain why you want to work there. Practice answering questions. Get comfortable talking about yourself—your strengths, experiences, and why you want the job. Practicing with friends or family can help. Prepare some questions to ask. Employers love it when you ask thoughtful questions—it shows you’re serious about the position. On the Day of the Interview • Bring extra copies of your resume. Always have a few spares, just in case. • Be on time. Plan to arrive early so you’re not rushing or stressed. • Take notes. Bring a notebook to jot down important details you want to remember. • After the interview, send a quick thankyou email. It’s a small gesture, but it shows you appreciate their time and are still interested in the position. Talking to Your Family About Your Career Goals Thinking about your future is exciting, but it can also be stressful. It’s helpful to talk to your family about your interests and plans, especially since they know you well and may have advice or suggestions you hadn’t considered. How to Start the Conversation Share what excites you about the career path or job you’re thinking of. Be ready to answer questions like “What education will you need?” or “What’s the job outlook like?” Be open to suggestions, but remember that it’s your life and your choice. Your family’s input is important, but you should follow the path that feels right for you. It’s also totally normal for your career ideas to change as you go. You’re still figuring things out! The important thing is to keep exploring your options and trying new things to see what fits. Exploring Career Options Your career is more than just one job—it’s a mix of experiences, from part-time work to volunteering, and everything in between. The more you try, the more you’ll learn about what you like (and what you don’t). Tips for Exploring • Take online career assessments to discover your strengths and interests. • Get involved in internships, clubs, or volunteer activities. • Research different career fields that interest you. Remember, it’s okay to change your mind as you go. Your first job won’t be your last, and you have time to figure out what makes you excited about the future. So take it step by step, explore your options, and keep an open mind. You’ve got this!

17 16 Interview With a Talent Acquisition Specialist When you’re in high school, thinking about the future is important. Understanding how the job market works and what skills you need can help you get a strong start. One field you may not have heard much about is “Talent Acquisition”, which is all about helping companies find the right people for their jobs. Talent Acquisition specialists are professionals who help companies identify and recruit the top talent in their industries. We interviewed Simi, a Talent Acquisition Specialist with over 17 years of experience. Here is some information about what this specialist Human Resources role is, and how you as a high school student can prepare for your future. What is Talent Acquisition? Talent acquisition is more than just hiring; it's a strategic process where companies look for employees who will help them grow in the long run. It is not just about needing someone today, but thinking about what kind of talent the company will need in five years. One expert, Simi, with 17 years in talent recruitment, describes her role as managing everything from finding candidates to helping them get settled in their new jobs. “People working in talent acquisition are like matchmakers. They understand what the company needs and look for candidates who fit those roles, not just in terms of skills but also in terms of how they fit within the company culture.” Her focus is on understanding the needs of both the business and the potential employee. This helps ensure that the person will stick around for a while, which is a winwin for both sides. How do Talent Scouts Find Candidates? Finding the right people for a job isn’t always as easy as posting an ad online. Talent scouts use several strategies, like looking through platforms such as LinkedIn, attending industry events, and networking with people in different fields. They also rely heavily on referrals—where one person recommends someone they know. “What’s important in all of this is building relationships, not just filling positions quickly. For example, if you have a strong connection with a mentor or someone already in the field, they might remember you when an opportunity arises.” So, relationships matter—a lot! Job Market Trends In recent years, several trends have shaped how companies hire. One major change is the rise of remote and hybrid work, where employees might work from home part of the time or all the time. This has changed how companies recruit people, as they no longer focus only on local candidates. People from across the country or around the world can apply for jobs. There’s also been a big push for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. “This means companies are trying to hire people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to make their teams stronger and more creative.” Technology is playing a huge role, too. Today, companies use AI (Artificial Intelligence) to screen resumes and even conduct initial interviews. These changes are making the hiring process faster and more efficient. The Power of Networking If you’ve ever heard the phrase “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” it’s not entirely wrong! Networking is one of the most powerful tools you can use to land a job. But how Does a High School Student Start Networking? The good news is, you don’t have to attend fancy events or have business cards.
19 18 Networking can be as simple as talking to your teachers, joining school clubs, or attending career events. “Start small by making connections with people you know—teachers, family friends, or even classmates who have similar interests. You can also use LinkedIn to connect with professionals in fields that interest you.” Volunteering, internships, and part-time jobs are excellent ways to meet people who can help you later on. The key is to build relationships over time, so when opportunities arise, people think of you. The Role of Technology in Hiring Technology is making it easier for companies to find and hire the right people. Here are a few tools recruiters use: • Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS):These systems help companies screen resumes to find candidates that match their job openings. They are programs that scan resumes for keywords. That’s why it’s crucial to keep your resume simple and easy to read—no fancy fonts or graphics that might confuse the system. • AI in Recruitment: AI can help match your skills with jobs and even conduct initial interviews through chat sessions or video interviews. • Social Media: LinkedIn is a crucial platform for job searching and networking. It’s also where companies look for talent, so having an optimized LinkedIn profile is important. Why Personal Branding Matters In today’s digital world, personal branding is more important than ever. “Personal branding is the way you present yourself online and off-line. It includes your social media profiles, resume, and how you interact with people professionally.” Start by identifying your strengths and what makes you unique. Maybe you’re great at solving problems or you have excellent communication skills— whatever it is, make sure that comes across in your online profiles, resume, and the way you talk about yourself. Preparing for job Interviews Getting an interview is only half the battle. To do well, you need to prepare. Research the company, practice answering common questions, and make sure to dress appropriately. Being on time and showing enthusiasm for the role can set you apart from other candidates. Starting Early is Key It’s never too early to start building skills and gaining experience. Volunteer, look for internships, or try parttime jobs to help you understand what you enjoy doing. “Explore different career paths and stay curious—you might find your passion where you least expect it!“ And most importantly, don’t be afraid of setbacks. Every experience, good or bad, can help you learn and grow. By starting to think about these things now, you’ll be better prepared to make smart decisions about your future career. And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll be the talent companies are scouting for! Essential Skills Employers Look For Communication: Being able to write and speak clearly is crucial, whether it’s for an interview or a group project. # 1 # 2 # 3 # 4 Digital Literacy: Knowing how to use basic tools such as Google Workspace or Microsoft Office will give you an advantage. Critical Thinking: Employers love people who can think through problems and come up with solutions. Adaptability: The job market is always changing, and being able to adjust is key to long-term success. According to Simi, whether you’re thinking about going to college, starting a job, or both, certain skills are essential. Here’s what you should focus on developing:

29 28 If you’re a high school student working a part-time job, or looking for a job at one of these organizations, you might be wondering if it will help you in the long run. Will it be more than just a temporary job or short-term way to make extra cash? The answer, according to a recent study, is yes! In fact, working at one of the top-ranked companies on the new American Opportunity Index could be one of the best ways to kickstart your career. What is “The American Opportunity Index”? The American Opportunity Index assesses how well different US companies maximize their talent and individual employee growth. Created by the Schultz Family Foundation, Burning Glass Institute, and Harvard Business School—this index ranks 50 large U.S. companies based on how they provide opportunities for entry-level workers, particularly those with only high school diplomas. The companies were evaluated on three key factors: 1. How often they hire entrylevel workers 2. How well they promote those workers from within 3. How well they prepare employees to move on to higher-paying jobs Why This Matters for You This ranking should be good news if you already work parttime at companies like Chipotle Mexican Grill, Foot Locker, Gap Inc., or Starbucks. Best Employers For High School Students If you don’t, and you are looking for a job, perhaps you should consider applying to one of them. This is because according to the study, they can be incredible launchpads for your career. According to the Study Chipotle Mexican Grill, ranked number one, is known for its structured development programs. Entry-level workers can move up quickly with the right effort. In fact, Chipotle is often celebrated for how well it promotes from within. Lowe’s, another top-ranked company, offers various training opportunities for its employees. It is known for helping them build skills that can lead to management positions. Walgreens Boots Alliance is highly rated at number three. This is not just for hiring entry-level workers, but also for giving them opportunities to move into higher-paying roles, whether within the company or elsewhere. What the Numbers Show To put it in perspective, companies at the top of the First Jobs metric are 4.3 times more likely to hire entry-level workers than other large firms. But that’s just the beginning, at companies strong in the Advancement Within category, such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber, employees are 2.5 times more likely to get promoted compared to their peers at other large companies. These promotions often come with significant raises— at least 10% in many cases. Perhaps even more impressively, employees at companies strong in
31 30 the ‘Advancement Beyond’ category—like Starbucks—are up to five times more likely to leave for much higher-paying jobs than employees at other large firms. These companies rank highly because they offer workers something that goes far beyond just a paycheck—they provide pathways to growth. Many students or recent graduates think that without a college degree, their job options are limited to deadend roles. But that’s not the case at these companies. In fact, those who start out at one of the top ranked companies are significantly more likely to get promoted, develop new skills, and eventually land higher-paying roles than those who start at other large firms. This means they can potentially secure even better opportunities elsewhere down the line. A Real Career Boost Working part-time at places like Chipotle, Foot Locker, or PNC Financial Services is about more than just learning to manage a busy shift or help customers. For example, Gap and other top companies often offer leadership training programs, skill-building workshops, and the chance to take on more responsibility over time. These experiences build up your resume and make you a more attractive candidate, whether you decide to stay or pursue other opportunities in the future. What Does This Mean for You? If you’re currently balancing high school or college with a part-time job, it’s easy to feel like what you’re doing might not matter in the bigger picture. But if you’re working at any of these top companies, you’re already setting yourself up for success. Be sure to take advantage of all they have to offer. These companies understand the importance of giving young people like you a solid start in the workforce. So, the next time you clock in for a shift, remember that your job might just be the first step on a path toward a brighter future. Take advantage of the opportunities to learn, grow, and develop the skills that will help you not only in your current role but throughout your entire career. 41 40 Nexgen Careers was launched in 2011 by Neil Finnie and his co-founders. It aims to build students’ confidence and skills to help them thrive in the rapidly changing future of work. Q: What inspired you to start Nexgen? A: We noticed that students weren’t fully prepared for the transition to internships or full-time work. Many lacked the practical and emotional skills needed to thrive in these environments. Additionally, many companies weren’t always ready to support young professionals in building those crucial skills. That’s why we created Nexgen - to offer a bridge to help students transition and empower them to maximize their potential. Instead of traditional internships where students are often left to figure things out on their own, Nexgen offers a collaborative work experience. Students work in groups on real projects from local organizations, creating a “safe space” to develop confidence and skills. We also provide training in human-centric skills—things like creativity, communication, and building resilience. By the end of our program, students are ready for the next step in their career journey, whether that’s another internship or even their first full-time job. Our goal is to equip students with essential skills, like creativity, resilience, and communication, that are often overlooked but critical for long-term success. Q: Can you explain the "hidden job market" and why it matters? A: The hidden job market refers to job opportunities that aren’t advertised through traditional means like job boards or company websites. Instead, these positions are filled through internal hiring, employee referrals, or networking. Many people aren’t aware of how large this market is— some people estimate that up to 70% of jobs may never be posted publicly. If you’re only looking at advertised roles, you’re missing out on a huge chunk of opportunities. Q: Why is knowing about the hidden job market helpful for students? A: Understanding the hidden job market gives students a significant advantage. It helps them focus on networking and building connections, which is key to unlocking these unadvertised opportunities. By leveraging platforms like LinkedIn and attending industry events, students can position themselves as candidates before jobs are even posted. Interview with Neil Finnie at Nexgen Careers
43 42 not just ready for the next step—they’re equipped to navigate a future that might look very different from what they expected. Q: How does Nexgen differ from traditional career planning programs? A: Traditional programs often focus on internships or simulations, but we offer students work on real, live projects with actual organizations, so they’re getting handson experience that matters. We also offer training on how to effectively use platforms like LinkedIn—not just as a digital resume but as a powerful networking tool. Lastly, we teach students to spend their time more effectively. Instead of applying for every advertised job, they should focus on the hidden job market by building connections and networking—because that’s where most opportunities lie. Q: What are you noticing about young people’s thinking about their future careers? A: Many students don’t fully understand how much the job market is changing, especially with the rise of AI and automation. A lot of young people still think they’ll find a traditional 9-to-5 job without much trouble, but they’re often unaware of how industries are shifting. When we show them data about the future of work, especially around AI, they’re usually surprised—and sometimes a bit anxious. Our goal is to help them feel prepared rather than worried. It’s about giving them the tools to adapt and thrive, even in uncertain times. Q: What does it mean to be “future-proofed”? A: Being future-proofed means developing the skills that will help you succeed, no matter how the job market changes. Since no one can predict exactly what the future holds, it’s about building adaptability, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning. We encourage students to focus on human-centric skills like creativity and communication—these will be valuable in any career. We also recommend short, flexible training (like micro-courses) instead of committing to long-term degrees that may become outdated quickly. Q: Do cover letters and resumes still matter? A: Up to 70% of jobs are never advertised, and those roles don’t require a resume or cover letter at all. For the 30% of jobs that are publicly posted, resumes and cover letters are still necessary tools. So, while resumes and cover letters may not be required for every job, they are still important in more traditional fields and recruiting practices. But today, many companies use programs that scan resumes for keywords to make the initial cut. Many employers report that hires based on resume scans often don’t last because there’s a poor cultural fit. We believe that the future of hiring will be based on more dynamic methods—like showcasing portfolios or having interviews with AI bots that highlight your strengths better than a paper resume can. Q: What advice do you have for high school students planning their future careers? A: My main advice is to be adaptable. Focus on building a wide range of skills, especially those human-centric ones like communication and creativity. Be open to new learning opportunities and new ways of working. Also, don’t rely solely on what you’re being taught in school—make sure you stay informed about how industries are evolving. The world of work is changing rapidly, and the best thing you can do is stay curious, keep learning, and be ready to pivot if needed. Developing strong communication skills, networking, and staying adaptable will set you up for success, no matter what the future holds. This approach not only increases their chances of finding work but also puts them in roles that might be a better fit than those advertised publicly. Q: What modern trends should students be aware of when planning their careers? A: One of the biggest trends is the use of technology in recruitment, especially AI. Companies increasingly use AI to screen candidates and even replace some roles. However, what sets you apart is your human-centric skills—creativity, empathy, and adaptability. Companies are looking for these in candidates because they’re skills that technology can’t easily replicate. Another major trend is the importance of platforms like LinkedIn. Today, your digital presence is just as important as your resume. You need to understand how to be found online and how to showcase your skills in a way that resonates with recruiters. Q: What’s Nexgen’s approach to preparing students for future career success? A: Our focus is on teaching students the skills they’ll need to adapt to the rapidly changing world of work. That means developing human-centric skills like resilience, communication, and stress management. We also make sure students understand how to research and track changes in their industries. We want them to be curious about how their field is evolving and ready to pivot if necessary. By the time they finish our program, they’re Find out more about Nexgen at https://nexgencareers.co/
